The Lord Crewe Arms, Blanchland

This wonderful hotel had its beginnings as a 12th Century Abbot's Priory. Every area - lounge, bar, dining rooms - is muzac free, with the one exception of the large upstairs dining room. There's a beautiful garden to sit in and a kitchen garden producing vegetables for the original and appetizing menu. Surprisingly affordable food.

Brocket Arms

We enjoyed a home cooked meal at this intimate country pub.
No music except occasional live music such as jazz.
Very friendly.
Historic ruined church to explore, just across the road.

Ciao Bella!

Ciao Bella is a typical cheap and cheerful Italian restaurant, focusing on pasta and pizza but with more substantial dishes for those who want them. It has been going for years and has friendly staff and loads of character. A white piano provides occasional but not too loud music. It is not of course quiet on a busy Saturday evening when it is packed, but there are a few tables outside and on other nights it is peaceful enough. Blown-up stills from films of the golden age of Italian cinema - especially from films by Fellini - cover the walls.

Finbarrs, Durham

A pleasant restaurant serving good and interesting food. Our evening meal chosen off the Table d'Hote menu with a bottle of wine came to £30/head.
The staff were all charming.
There was no piped music and we were able to talk and hear easily.
The restaurant is at the back of the Kingslodge hotel situated in a quiet backstreet of Durham away from the city centre. It's well worth the walk.

La Poule au Pot - a venerable French Restaurant

One of London's most venerable restaurants, La Poule au Pot has hardly changed in 50 years. The atmosphere is still very Gallic - more so even than the cuisine - and very romantic. Minimalism has yet to manifest its bleak presence inside. Outside, Chelsea has seen the bohemians depart and the billionaires arrive, a depressing change reflected inevitably a bit in the prices. At lunch time, however, the fixed price menu is still good value. The pleasant house wine comes in huge unmarked bottles and the waiter makes a very rough guess as to how much you have drunk.

Swan Bar & Restaurant, The Globe Theatre, Bankside London

Part of the Globe Theatre complex. I have not actually eaten here but, walking inquisitively through it, I had the strong impression that it was muzac-free. Wonderful location, pricey menu.

Very good service, pleasant atmosphere, food nothing special but a good overall experience. There were speakers mounted on the wall, but they were not being used and I complemented the staff on the peace and quiet.

The Cook Book

This cafe is the place to head for when visiting St. Just in West Cornwall, in the Land's End Peninsula. It's clean, quiet, with friendly staff, and it has a good, substantial menu at attractive prices. Also a well presented second hand-bookstore. There is also a polite notice discouraging the use of mobile phones as well, so there is double the reason to go there.

Dev's Kerala Restauran

Simple and very cheap South Indian restaurant. Very popular with a good athmosphere. I have been three times so far and have only had the vegetarian options. While not as good as London's Drummond Street eateries and a bit less specialised; they advertise tandoori dishes as well as vegetarian ones, it is a very useful piped music-free oasis in a popular eating area of Bristol. It is also the cheapest way I have found to have an evening meal in Bristol.
