The Cook Book

This cafe is the place to head for when visiting St. Just in West Cornwall, in the Land's End Peninsula. It's clean, quiet, with friendly staff, and it has a good, substantial menu at attractive prices. Also a well presented second hand-bookstore. There is also a polite notice discouraging the use of mobile phones as well, so there is double the reason to go there.

London Review Cake Shop

Accessed through the London Review Bookshop.

As well as excellent home-made cakes, quiches, sandwiches and very good coffee (from the Monmouth Coffee House), the cake shop serves a variety of teas. I had an lovely sweet Oolong, served in the correct way so that I could control the infusion process. Although I only sat and read for an hour, others had obviously settled down for longer. Some chatting and a great deal of reading make this a home-from-home.

Filmhouse Cafe/Bar, Edinburgh

A quiet relaxed place to be in the daytime, with very low levels of music playing and none atall if you're lucky. Even lunchtimes have a quiet atmosphere even though the Fimhouse is only a couple of hundred yards from Edinburgh's West End. In the evening it gets much busier and noisier with music turned up.

Main meals £5/£7 from 3pm to 5pm.

Hot and cold food available until 10pm every day. Friendly staff.
''Eleven draught beers, five real ales, twelve wines by the glass, loads of bottled beers and over thirty malt whiskies''

Kings Place

Kings Place is the new rival to the Wigmore Hall for chamber music. Its accoustics are impeccable and it doesn't even have the Wigmore Hall's Jubilee Line rumble.

London Review Bookshop

Just down a street opposite the British Museum, the London Review Bookshop is a gem. Well stocked, particularly considering its apparently small size, and with a knowledgeable and friendly staff. Associated with the London Review of Books, the shop specializes in literature, the arts, politics, history etc. It has a particularly wide range of evening and weekend events such as readings by authors, as well as discount evenings and customer socials. All the details are on their site at www.lrbshop.co.uk.
