Orange Tree

Traditional pub near the Cricket Ground, serving eight cask beers and good pub food at reasonable prices. No music except for the occasional party. Televised sport is limited to major events (rarely football); otherwise, the only accompaniment to your visit is the hubbub of conversation.

Cricketers Arms, Tangley, Hampshire

Wonderful ancient inn, well worth making the short detour from the A303.

We loved the The Cricketers Arms:
Unspoiled atmospheric inn.
Superb real ale served straight from the barrel.
Excellent and varied menu, all freshly cooked to order.
Inviting inglenook fireplace.
Welcoming proper landlord.

No music, no gambling machines.

We spent the night in the toasty log cabins behind the pub - comfortable, quiet, and clean. A generous full English breakfast rounded off our visit nicely.

Highly recommended.

Bell

This is a quiet country pub, offering a good range of meals and beers. None of the ubiquitous speakers but occasional gentle soft tracks played behind the bar. We arrived in time to order their home-steamed steak and kidney pudding – rich and very filling, oozing with dark gravy, served with creamy mash, carrots and cauli’.
[Other facilities: Garden to rear, Ladies loo modernised and opened by the ‘Olympic Pilot’, selection of games, newspapers, paperbacks …]

This is a most agreeable, relaxed, music-free, dog - friendly pub, with Bill and Joan offering a range of excellent beers and modestly - priced home cooked food. Accommodation is also available. Its very existence is proof that life in this frenetic century is still worth living.

Market Town Taverns

Robert Stevens recommends this chain of pubs which are 'spartan in their furnishing' with decent but limited range of food and 'excellent beer'. Typical is the Brigantes at 144 Micklegate York YO1 6JX
In their words, all are ‘un-themed but share several common features:-
A unique and welcoming ambience
A wide range of real ales from independent brewers
A fine selection of bottled & draught Continental beers
An extensive wine list
Good food prepared in-house
Daily and Sunday newspapers
Music-free bar areas in most taverns
Dogs are welcome
