Ceilidh Place,Ullapool

If you're looking for somewhere quiet in Ullapool try the Ceilidh Place. They do have music playing in the cafe/restaurant but were happy to serve us our lunch in their peaceful front sitting room (when we asked nicely!)
Their bookshop is muzac-free.

The Wallingford Bookshop 10c St Martin's Street, Wallingford Oxon. OX10 0AL

A lovely independent bookshop in a quiet little historic market town on the River Thames; the staff are friendly and cheerful, knowledgeable and able to obtain ordered books much faster than most large chains. Absolutely no piped music, although the staff confess to bursting into the odd refrain when feeling particularly happy.

The Cook Book

This cafe is the place to head for when visiting St. Just in West Cornwall, in the Land's End Peninsula. It's clean, quiet, with friendly staff, and it has a good, substantial menu at attractive prices. Also a well presented second hand-bookstore. There is also a polite notice discouraging the use of mobile phones as well, so there is double the reason to go there.

JOHN SANDOE A genuine bibliophile's bookshop.

A real find: a genuine old-fashioned bookshop deep in Chelsea, with over 25,000 titles stocked (on window ledges and stairs when there is no space for them elsewhere), and friendly staff chosen for their knowledge of, and enthusiasm for, books of varying types. It is open civilised hours (i.e. not at midnight but on Sunday.) If you want a particular book, they will scour the earth looking for it.

This branch of Waterstone's is blissfully music-free. The manager was told by the company to put music in and he refused.

Waterstones Bookshop, Princes St, Edinburgh

A rare quiet spot in the West End of Princes St to browse and have a coffee.
There is no music here any more, neither anywhere in the bookshop nor in the cafe on the second floor, due to the efforts of the Edinburgh Pipedown group.

Daunt Books

While Daunt's originally concentrated on travel books, its branches now stock books on a huge range of subjects and their staff are most unusually helpful and informative. The atmosphere in all shops is almost dangerously agreeable – dangerous to the pocket, that is. The original branch in Marylebone High Street is 'the most beautiful bookshop in London', according to The Daily Telegraph.

Heywood Hill

Founded more than 70 years ago, this is one of London's smallest bookshops and one of the most elegant and individual in the world. It is also one of the most delightfully old-fashioned, with receipts written out by hand.

London Review Bookshop

Just down a street opposite the British Museum, the London Review Bookshop is a gem. Well stocked, particularly considering its apparently small size, and with a knowledgeable and friendly staff. Associated with the London Review of Books, the shop specializes in literature, the arts, politics, history etc. It has a particularly wide range of evening and weekend events such as readings by authors, as well as discount evenings and customer socials. All the details are on their site at www.lrbshop.co.uk.
