Cecio: pleasant trattoria in Rome with simple well-cooked food

In a quiet street near the Termini, Rome's main railway station, Trattoria Cecio is worth seeking out. It is run by three tall black-bearded brothers who at first sight look alarmingly like members of an extremist group. Don't worry, they are not. They are instead devoted to serving good food in a simple but pleasant trattoria that attracts Italians as well as tourists - always an encouraging sign. Try their antipasto de casa for a huge amount of smoked meats and the grilled prawns. The house wine, which they bottle themselves, is particularly good. Best to book tel 06 4464991.

Attractive restaurant at a famous museum

The Penlee House Museum Restaurant is an attractive venue for coffee or lunch, clean, good food and friendly staff and right inside the famous Penlee Museum. There are also tables outside with views of the garden. Also on site is a well-stocked gift shop.

The Compasses, Chicksgrove, Salisbury, a perfect pub

The Compasses at Lower Chicksgrove in south Wiltshire may be hard to find but it is well worth the effort for it is in many ways the perfect country pub. Set in idyllic countryside. it is medieval in origin. It retains many original features, including flagstone floor, open inglenook fireplace and wooden beams, while having fine food, a decent wine list and many good beers. The cooking has been improved recently by Ben, its new manager, who has promised never to have piped music or television. There are bedrooms upstairs and tables outside. Dogs and children welcome but do book.

Patisserie Valerie

A couple of branches of the Patisserie Valerie have been praised by members in the past; however, it is worth pointing out that we have been in branches all over the country and have never yet found one with piped music. It seems to be company policy, and means that in a huge number of cities across the UK there is at least one good café with no background noise. Support it!

Peggy Scotts Cafe nr Forfar

I rather stumbled upon this place on a somewhat dreary section of road on a long drive up to Aberdeen. I liked the comfy sofas, and the fact I could keep an eye on my car, which had a whole load of stuff in it. A good range of food, plus a gift shop. Good friendly service.

The Crown Inn, King's Somborne, near Stockbridge, Hants

A traditional unspoilt pub - no elaborate menus, no astonishingly high prices - in an old thatched house in the centre of a pretty village. Excellent beers, friendly service and convivial atmosphere. Try their Sunday lunch. There is a garden outside.

PerryWood Garden Centre

My review is for the café in this Garden Centre.
When I went the whole garden centre was music free, including the café.
It serves a pretty standard garden centre fare of a small selection of hot meals, soups, paninis and cakes etc. I think I would have expected a larger selection, given the size of the garden centre and café (which is pretty enormous), but what we had was perfectly OK.
