The Barrel Inn - Bretton, near Eyam, Derbyshire

The Barrel Inn located in the hamlet of Bretton (near Eyam in the Hope Valley, S32 5QD) is an historic Derbyshire pub and hostelry dating back to 1597. The pub itself is piped music-free, and serves locally-sourced, freshly cooked food, and local ale. Among local specialities served is the Derbyshire Oatcake - which is a whole meal. There is a real log fire in the fireplace. The pub is dog friendly. Located near the village of Eyam (the 'plague village') and high above the village of Foolow, the views from the front of the inn are spectacular and panoramic.

The Sportsman Pub, 569 Redmires Road, Sheffield S10 4LJ

The Sportsman Pub, 569 Redmires Road, Sheffield S10 4LJ (0114 230-1935) is a wonderful, old-style pub run by the same family for two generations. Located on the fringe of the Peak District on the way to the Redmires Reservoir, the pub has spectacular views over the hilly landscape surrounding Sheffield. One of its attractions for readers of Pipedown is that it is a piped-music free pub, the only noise being the chatter of people in the pub. The food is excellent; eveything is made by the staff, and I believe mostly locally sourced. Locally produced ales are available.

Villa Clementine: the best B&B in Sicily

The Villa Clementine may be hard to find - down many side streets on the edge of Piazza Armerina - but it is worth the effort for what must be the best B&B in Sicily. (If you get lost in the town, ring the Villa and they will send someone to guide you by car.) It is very conveniently sited, however, for visiting the famous Roman mosaics at the Villa Casale only 4km away.

Hotel Villa Romeo, Catania, Sicily

The hotel was once a prince's palace and it still feels palatial, with a grand staircase, high ceilings, gilt mirrors etc. Prices, however, are surprisingly reasonable. Bedrooms are spacious, comfortable and well-equipped. Breakfast, which was fine by Italian standards, was in the remarkably quiet courtyard garden. The staff were especially friendly and helpful. Although we arrived very late (due to a delayed flight), they helped us find a parking space and a restaurant that was still open. Best of all, not a trace of piped music.
