Pottery Craft and Coffee Shop, Laggan

A welcome stop-off point in the Highland countryside on the road between Fort William and the A9. High end crafts and very good home baking. A lovely courtyard to sit in in good weather. There's also a bunkhouse but it's for groups or families only.

A wonderful Victorian pub - with no noise-reflecting surfaces

The Princess Louise, part of the always muzac-free Sam Smiths group, is one of the finest Victorian pubs in London. Its restoration a few years ago to its 19th-century splendour won awards – deservedly, for downstairs the several small bars all retain their original panelling, tiles and mirrors. If you want to eat you must go upstairs where the restaurant now has a new chef and markedly better food. Prices are still reasonable, however.

Lloyds Pharmacy chain

Lloyds Pharmacy is the second biggest chain of chemists/pharmacies in Britain after Boots. Unlike Boots, whose branches are often now filled with piped music – a policy supported by their head office – Lloyds branches have gone muzac-free. The staff seem friendlier there than in Boots too.
Lloyds branches are scattered across the country. I have given the address of that in Salisbury. Their website offers a store locator. www.lloydspharmacy.com/

Hayloft Tearoom, Falkland

Charming tearoom in a narrow wynd opposite 15th century Falkland Palace. Home made cakes, scones, soups and light lunches. Friendly staff.

NB You might like to know that downstairs is a small but appealing holiday flat with a pleasant courtyard, also called The Hayloft.

Bristol Cathedral

This amazing cathedral, founded in 1140, has an astonishingly beautiful east end and is packed with history. It has a quiet unpretentious cafe and if the weather's right you can take your coffee out to the lovely cathedral courtyard and garden.

Also try the Bristol Central Library next door; see separate entry.

Bristol Central Library

A beautiful and spacious library in an historic building, it has the added benefit of a comfortable muzac-free cafe in the middle of it. Family run with fairtrade coffee and good homemade food, locally sourced, it's a peaceful spot to relax in a busy city.

However, the cafe is located next to the children's library, so if it's too noisy go next door to Bristol Cathedral which has a quiet cafe; see separate entry.

Cross Keys Inn, Thropton

Traditional village pub with several rooms downstairs and a lovely garden rising in terraces behind, the garden marred unfortunately by a noisy air conditioning unit. We found a spot where the noise was muffled by trees. I wished it had been a mealtime when I went through as the board said 'rabbit casserole'. No muzac throughout, by design.

The Lord Crewe Arms, Blanchland

This wonderful hotel had its beginnings as a 12th Century Abbot's Priory. Every area - lounge, bar, dining rooms - is muzac free, with the one exception of the large upstairs dining room. There's a beautiful garden to sit in and a kitchen garden producing vegetables for the original and appetizing menu. Surprisingly affordable food.
