This web site belongs to the Pipedown campaign. This privacy statement only covers this site:

References to “we”, “us”, or “our” in this Privacy Policy are references to the Pipedown campaign and relate purely to this site.

1. Information about you

1.1 The only personal information that we hold is for registered contributors to the site. That information is limited to e-mail, first and last name, and the user-name given when the account was set up. What will appear on reviews and comments is a nickname. By default, your nickname is your user-name.  Your e-mail address is held securely and is never visible on the site. You can view and edit all your personal data except for your user-name. Your password, which is not held anywhere on the site, but you can change it. If that seems impossible to you, look at

1.2 Your location and Google: On loading our home-page, the page requests your position from the browser using its Geolocation API. Usually, your browser passes the request on to Google to get the information. Once the page has the information, it uses to request a map, passing on the latitiude and longitude as the centre point. The browser will check whether you have already consented to or blocked such requests for web pages originating from That consent or refusal is accessible via your browser’s privacy settings and is specific to our site address. The first time you open our home-page, your prermission is sought by the browser. You can change the permission settings for in your browser settings. The details of how your browser handles such requests are browser specific but the  Mozilla Firefox explanation is typical. The request does not identify you, but it often sends your computer’s IP address and the names of nearby wireless access points to determine your position.  The location is used immediately by your browser to construct a request to Google to furnish a map centred on the right latitude and longitude, and then in a request to the Quiet Corners site to find entries within the selected radius of your location. The quiet corners site may log the information embedded in the query string your browser sends. The only time we switch this logging on is for diagnostic purposes when something goes wrong. This logging information will never be passed on to third parties except for further analysis. Any personal information would not be included.

2.Our use of this information

The only use that we will make of your e-mail information held on the Quiet Corners site is to e-mail you about the site. Of course, Pipedown may already have that information.

2.2 We will not share your personal  information held on this site with anybody. Any change in this rule would require your specific informed consent.

2.3 If you upload photos to the site (for example, to include in reviews), the photo may contain metadata (often in EXIF format) that may include, for example, location, date, and time. This will be visible to anybody who downloads the photo. If you do not want it incuded, you should remove it before uploading. There are many tools for editing and removing metadata from files.

3. Security

3.1 We will take reasonable precautions to prevent the loss, misuse or alteration of information you give us. All communication with the site is encrypted but the site itself if secured but not encrypted.

3.2 Communications in connection with this site may be sent by e-mail. For ease of use and compatibility, communications will not be sent in an encrypted form unless you require it and provide the certification to enable us to communicate with you in that way. E-mail unless encrypted is not a fully secure means of communication. Whilst we endeavour to keep our systems and communications protected against viruses and other harmful effects we cannot bear responsibility for all communications being virus-free.

4. Cookies

4.1 This site uses WordPress as a platform for delivering content. When you log-in, for instance, to post a review, WordPress puts a cookie in your browser’s cache area.
