The Boot, Berwick St James, near Salisbury

This is a fine traditional country pub. Strictly speaking it is not wholly free of muzak, as there is soft music playing in parts at times. But the music becomes inaudible when the pub fills up with cheerful drinkers and diners. (It is still definitely a local that does food rather than a gastropub.) Of great age – with massive stone walls, open fires etc – The Boot serves food six days a week but not on Sunday evenings or  Mondays (it is normally closed Monday lunch time.) Its cooking has won it a place in the Good Food Guide over many years while its beers – principally Wadsworth – and its wines are impressive. Cathy and Giles, who run it, are very friendly and helpful. There are tables outside in the garden and dogs and children are welcomed. Best to book for meals as it can get very busy. Berwick St James is a small village just off the A303, not far from Stonehenge
