The Compasses at Lower Chicksgrove in south Wiltshire may be hard to find but it is well worth the effort, for it is in many ways the perfect country pub. Set in idyllic countryside, it is medieval in origin. It retains many original features, including flagstone floor, open inglenook fireplace and wooden beams, while having fine food, a decent wine list and many good beers. The cooking has been improved recently by Ben, its new manager, who has promised never to have piped music or television. There are bedrooms upstairs and tables outside. Dogs and children welcome but do book.
Update 3 June 2021: the quality of the food has become wildly variable. Some days it is very good, on other days it is totally mediocre. There seems no way of telling in advance. But the beer and the pub itself are always excellent.
