The Sportsman Pub, 569 Redmires Road, Sheffield S10 4LJ (0114 230-1935) is a wonderful, old-style pub run by the same family for two generations. Located on the fringe of the Peak District on the way to the Redmires Reservoir, the pub has spectacular views over the hilly landscape surrounding Sheffield. One of its attractions for readers of Pipedown is that it is a piped-music free pub, the only noise being the chatter of people in the pub. The food is excellent; eveything is made by the staff, and I believe mostly locally sourced. Locally produced ales are available. A favourite of walkers, the pub is dog friendly. Open for lunches and dinners, or a pint, The Sportsman is closed on Mondays. Cards are not accepted. This pub should NOT be confused with a pub of the same in Crosspool down the road which, as an Embers Inn, is noisy.
