Surrounded by very pleasant gardens – trees, flowers, lawns, terraces, a good-sized swimming pool – Villa Clementine is definitely the best B&B in Sicily I have visited. It is not cheap but it is worth it. The bedrooms are large and comfortable, being traditionally if idiosyncratically furnished. Some bedrooms have sofas and most of the accompanying bathrooms have real bath tubs. Rita, the immensely genial and helpful landlady, offers the biggest and best breakfast I have eaten south of the Alps (‘Rita collazione!’), much of it being home-made if not home-grown. She also happily drove us into town (it’s a bit of a labyrinth) for dinner and collected us later from the restaurant. Not a trace of piped music anywhere in the Villa itself, of course.
Piazza Armerina is an interesting small hill town in its own right.
